CANVAS in association with Riverside Studios, London and Culture Ireland presents 'Person, Place or Thing', an exhibition of five innovative artists responding to the notion of physical and emotional space. Working through paint, print and photography each of the artists displays incredibly innovative ways of approaching their subjects. Frank Abruzzese’s enigmatic photographs push urban landscapes to a heightened sense of reality. Using long exposures, he creates highly textural pieces which evoke hyper-real places and landscapes. Emmet Kierans explores psychological space by physically taking on the personae of carnival and theatrical characters and using them (or himself) as the basis of his paintings. Mary Claire Kehoe’s photography also aims to portray a psychological narrative by depicting the vulnerability of empty dark streets and spaces. Again, the physically of her involvement in this is paramount as she freely admits to feelings of threat and fear in their construction. Eimearjean McCormack looks at abandoned objects in disused buildings and documents them by printing onto blocks of wood via a photographic process. Miriam McConnon’s paintings examine domestic scenes of garments and more particularly communion dresses hanging on washing lines. She is specifically interested in the narrative of the line, both in terms of a continuous thought process and also as a means to highlight delicate forms. The exhibition officially open on Thursday 9th August at 7pm in the Riverside Studios. Enquiries to Ciara Garvey: ciara@canvas.ie Tel UK: +44 (0) 75 1406 3364 | IRL: +353 (0) 87 633 9208 |
